One common question before buying a travel SIM or eSIM is: Do I need to submit my passport, IC or any identity document for KYC?
For Happy Travel SIM data-only travel SIM/eSIM products, the answer is simple: we do not ask customers to submit identity documents for KYC.
This article explains why, how activation works, and what happens to apps such as WhatsApp, WeChat and LINE.
Why our travel SIM/eSIM does not require KYC
Our travel SIM/eSIM products are designed for tourist data usage only. They provide mobile internet access, but they do not include a regular phone number.
That means they cannot be used for traditional voice calls, cannot send traditional SMS, and are not meant to be used as a normal local phone line.
Because the product is data-only and built for short-term travel use, Happy Travel SIM does not collect passports, IC photos or other identity documents from customers for KYC.
Data-only also helps prevent misuse
A data-only travel SIM/eSIM is meant to be an internet access channel. It is suitable for maps, messaging apps, email, ride-hailing, translation, hotel communication and general travel browsing.
It is not designed for opening a new phone number, sending SMS, or using a local number for non-travel purposes. This helps keep the product focused on safe, simple travel connectivity.
How do I activate it?
For most Happy Travel SIM physical SIM cards and eSIM plans, activation is easy:
- Install the eSIM or insert the SIM before or during your trip.
- Arrive in the destination country.
- Turn on mobile data and Data Roaming for the travel SIM/eSIM line.
- The plan will usually activate automatically once it connects to the supported local network.
Some plans may have specific instructions, so always follow the guide sent with your order.
Will my WhatsApp, WeChat or LINE number change?
No. Your WhatsApp, WeChat, LINE and similar messaging accounts stay the same.
These apps remain tied to your original account or phone number. The travel SIM/eSIM only provides internet data, just like connecting your phone to Wi-Fi. It does not replace your WhatsApp number or change your existing chat account.
Can I make calls with communication apps?
Yes. App-based calls and messages are supported as long as the app uses internet data.
You can use WhatsApp calls, WeChat calls, LINE calls, Messenger calls, video meetings, maps, email, social media and travel apps normally, subject to your data plan and local network conditions.
Can I watch videos?
Yes, but please be careful with your data usage.
Video streaming is one of the highest data-consuming activities. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram Reels, Netflix and video calls can use a lot of data quickly, especially in high quality. If your plan has a fixed data allowance, lower the video quality, download content on Wi-Fi when possible, and check your remaining data regularly.
