It depends on your plan type:

Why Does Hotspot Drain a Daily Data Plan So Fast?

On a Daily Data plan, hotspot will technically work — but your daily allowance can disappear in just minutes. Here's why.

When you turn on your hotspot, the connected devices (laptops, tablets, other phones) see it as a normal Wi-Fi network. As soon as they connect, they often start running background tasks automatically, such as:

• App and system updates
• Automatic cloud backup and sync — Google Drive, Google Photos, Apple iCloud and Photos
• Photo and video uploads
• Email and app syncing

These background tasks can upload and download large amounts of data without you doing anything — and on a limited daily plan, that can use up your entire day's data all at once.

For this reason, we strongly recommend NOT using hotspot to connect other devices on a Daily Data plan. If you really need to, turn off automatic updates and cloud backup on the connected device first.

Why Can't Unlimited Plans Use Hotspot?

Unlimited plans run on the mobile operator's network under a Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

"Unlimited" does not mean "no rules." A Fair Usage Policy is how operators keep the network fast and fair for everyone. To prevent a small number of users from overloading the network — for example, by tethering several devices for heavy downloads — operators restrict certain high-usage activities.

Hotspot (tethering) is one of those restricted activities, so it is turned off on unlimited plans. These plans are designed for internet use on a single phone.
